Ganna Prokhorova
Ganna was born in 1983 in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, which means her childhood straddles two worlds. She was eight years old when the Soviet Union collapsed. She grew up not in a stable post-independence country, but in the turbulent and disorienting years of the 1990s, a decade of economic collapse, identity uncertainty, and the painful construction of a new national reality. By the time she was a young adult, Ukraine had already lived through theOrange Revolution (2004). By 2014, she was thirty-one. This generational position is exceptional and absolutely central to understanding her story. Ganna is not someone who read about the Soviet Union in history books, she lived in it, however briefly. She belongs to a generation that had to learn, over the course of their own lifetime, what it meant to be Ukrainian rather than Soviet, and that process was never simple, clean, or finished. Starting the interview here, with her earliest memories, her family, her childhood home… is not just about establishing biographical facts. It is about understanding the raw material of her identity: the language spoken at home, the stories her parents and grandparents told, the things that were celebrated and the things that were never mentioned. These are the foundations on which everything else rests.
